A lot has been made of businessman Donald Trump’s conduct. Repeatedly, establishment Republicans will attack him for his insults, uncensored attacks, and absolute mockery of his opponents. As fears grow that Trump will indeed become the nominee, these outcries grow louder.
The solution is to find an alternate who will contrast him. For the moderate wing of the party, as well as the establishment itself, that answer is Senator Marco Rubio.
Senator Rubio has always been a party favorite, because of his ability to speak will and appear strong. He owns every debate when he’s not trying to dispel with this fiction that Barack Obama doesn’t know what he’s doing, because he knows exactly what he’s doing.
But is he really all he is made out to be?
The Florida Senator is clearly having an image problem. After Jeb Bush failed to catch on, the answer to the Trump problem is him. But he’s still not catching on, despite growing support and the donors turning to him.
As a result of his fine-tuned political image failing, he’s now apparently trying to emulate the image many claim Trump is. Senator Rubio is becoming a vulgar and hateful candidate who is hitting low to try and gain an edge.
CNN reported on Senator Rubio’s post-debate comments:
“He called me Mr. Meltdown,” Rubio said, smiling and saying that Thursday night during the commercial breaks, “he went backstage, he was having a meltdown.”
He said Trump had “one of those little sweat mustaches,” borrowing Trump’s “sweating” line of attack against Rubio, and said he wanted a full-length mirror.
“Maybe to make sure his pants weren’t wet,” Rubio said.
Isn’t this presidential? Could you imagine President Marco Rubio giving a speech at the White House, on national television as the Commander-In-Chief representing our nation globally, talking about how he’s going to make Vladimir Putin wet his pants?
Screams presidential, right?
CBS News reports on Senator Rubio’s more recent comments:
“He’s like 6’2” which is why I don’t understand why his hands are the size of someone who is 5’2″. Have you seen his hands?” Rubio said during a rally in Roanoke, Virgina. “You know what they say about men with small hands? You can’t trust them. You can’t trust them.”
Could you imagine President Rubio giving a speech about how we can’t trust Putin because of the size of his hands? About how ISIS is full of tiny hand men?
What do they say about men with small hands, Senator?
There are a number of immature implications that come with the comment. It’s not only inappropriate for a sitting United States Senator, it’s also inappropriate for a presidential candidate who wants to lead the nation.
Donald Trump may say some mean things that can be vulgar and insulting, but if our purpose is principled consistency, Senator Rubio needs to be called out on his conduct. It’s not right to slam one and celebrate the other.
